WEST PALM BEACH—When bestselling author Karen Rudolf traveled to China for work, she didn’t have the opportunity to experience traditional Chinese culture. That made her especially excited to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts’ Feb. 3 performance at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

Exiting the theater at the end of the evening, Ms. Rudolf described the experience as “very engrossing.”

“I just wanted to be a part of it. The music was amazing. From a cultural standpoint, it was very educational as well, and I really, really like that a lot,” she said. “I loved it.”

She was particularly moved by New York-based Shen Yun’s singers, who perform original Chinese songs in the traditional bel canto style, exploring the deeper meanings of life.

The lyrics are “very much from the heart,” she said. “They sang in such a space where it really brought their heart out [to] the audiences.”

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millennia, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and adhering to moral standards, they would be blessed by the divine.
However, after the communist takeover and the spread of atheism, all this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, Shen Yun’s mission is to bring back the beauty and goodness of “China before communism.”

As a writer who advocates empowerment, health, and wellness, Ms. Rudolf was moved by Shen Yun’s incorporation of spirituality into dance and music. She felt a deep divine connection through the performance.

For her, Shen Yun’s message is about “getting in touch with your inner self and being true to it.”

The artists “definitely were expressing that from the soul—from the inside out,” she added. “I wish I were a lot younger so I could be up there too.”

She also praised Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which features traditional Chinese instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa, an ancient lute.

By seamlessly blending the grandeur of a Western orchestra with the ethereal beauty of Chinese melodies, Shen Yun’s musicians create a profound emotional range that captures the depth of the human experience.

“The music was amazing,” she said. “I really struck the chord [with] the inner emotional aspect of it. You just wanted to be a part of it and just gravitate towards it. It was amazing.”

However, due to Shen Yun’s focus on reviving traditional culture and presenting the truth of events under communist rule in present-day China, it is currently forbidden by the regime from performing in China.

Reflecting on the story-based dances that raise awareness of the ongoing persecution of faith in China, Ms. Rudolf said the message was “very well portrayed.”

“I believe the way it was depicted really brought a sense of compassion out. The empathy was there; it brought the empathy out in the audience as well.”

She will “absolutely, without a doubt,” recommend Shen Yun to all her friends and family. If given the opportunity, she would also like to thank the company’s artistic director.

“The artistic director was amazing,” she said. “He put [the performance] together with such flow and such grace and ease. Thank you.”
