AMNÉVILLE, France— International company manager Laurent Romo got his first taste of Shen Yun Performing Arts when he attended the company’s evening show at Galaxie Amnéville on Dec. 20.
“The way the instruments were blended worked very well with the pieces. Some numbers were more traditional, others much more modern, so this mix of [classical Western and traditional Chinese] instrument styles really suited the show.”
The artists’ mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of divine-inspired culture as it was before decades of communist rule all but destroyed it.
“We understood that there is a message behind all of it. It’s not the kind of show we’re used to seeing, but we were not disappointed at all.”
He was particularly impressed by the water-sleeves dance, in which the female dancers’ long sleeves billowed and flowed across the stage like the gentle movement of water. According to the company’s website, these sleeves were a part of ancient Chinese feminine attire representing humility and grace.
Though Mr. Romo is not very familiar with traditional Chinese culture and spirituality, he enjoyed the artists’ presentation of the divine. It gave him “a sense of serenity, peace, calm.” “It’s something I really appreciated,” he said.
