AMNÉVILLE, France— International company manager Laurent Romo got his first taste of Shen Yun Performing Arts when he attended the company’s evening show at Galaxie Amnéville on Dec. 20.

After seeing the numerous ads for Shen Yun on TV for some time, “we told ourselves that we had to go one day or another,” he said. The performance turned out to be quite a surprise for Mr. Romo and his friend Catherine. They had a wonderful time.
“It’s the first time we’ve come to see this show, and we found it very nice. The sets were great, and we really liked the fact that there was a live orchestra,” he said.

“The way the instruments were blended worked very well with the pieces. Some numbers were more traditional, others much more modern, so this mix of [classical Western and traditional Chinese] instrument styles really suited the show.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance and music company. Presenting a brand-new set of programs each year, the company has been delighting audiences worldwide since 2006.

The artists’ mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of divine-inspired culture as it was before decades of communist rule all but destroyed it.

Mr. Romo is very supportive of this mission and loved “the fact that [Shen Yun] tells stories that are very cultural.”

“We understood that there is a message behind all of it. It’s not the kind of show we’re used to seeing, but we were not disappointed at all.”

He was particularly impressed by the water-sleeves dance, in which the female dancers’ long sleeves billowed and flowed across the stage like the gentle movement of water. According to the company’s website, these sleeves were a part of ancient Chinese feminine attire representing humility and grace.

Though Mr. Romo is not very familiar with traditional Chinese culture and spirituality, he enjoyed the artists’ presentation of the divine. It gave him “a sense of serenity, peace, calm.” “It’s something I really appreciated,” he said.

Shen Yun’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.
