SCHENECTADY, New York—Everything about Shen Yun Performing Arts was beautiful, according to award-winning interior designer Nancy Smith, who saw it for the first time with her husband, Peter Flaherty, at the Proctors Theater Sunday evening.

“The music was gorgeous and the costumes are beautiful,” Ms. Smith said. “The wings, the colors, the costumes, beautiful.”

Ms. Smith, the owner of Saratoga Signature Interiors, has won many awards for her work, which spans from California to New York.

New York-based Shen Yun brings 5,000 years of Chinese civilization to stage through the performing arts. Female dancers move gracefully across the stage in four-inch “flower pot shoes” in a dance showing the Manchurian court, characters from the epic Journey to the West battle a shape-shifting toad, and dynasties across the ages come to life.

“Absolutely gorgeous,” Ms. Smith said of the performance.

Mr. Flaherty recently retired from owning his own company. “I loved the special effects from the background bringing people in and out,” he said of the digital backdrop. “I loved that.”
