LAUSANNE, Switzerland—Among the audience members at Shen Yun Performing Arts’ sold-out performance at the Théâtre de Beaulieu on the afternoon of Feb. 21 was Bishop Jean-Marie Lovey. He appreciated the beauty and other values presented in the show, which reminded him of those of the Christian faith.
When discussing his experience of attending Shen Yun, Swiss Bishop Jean-Marie Lovey first highlights “an absolutely superb value to be promoted and defended in a rather harsh and difficult society”: beauty.“First, there is extraordinary beauty, harmony, and elegance,” he says. “And even if that were all there was, it would still be close to absolute values. Beauty is an absolute value.”
According to Shen Yun’s official website, the show aims to revive the authentic beauty of traditional Chinese culture, a beauty filled with harmony, grace, and spiritual elevation.“We also dare to talk about the meaning of life, respect for life, and caring for the poorest,” acknowledges the bishop, emphasizing that the New York-based company shows boldness in addressing certain themes on stage.
“It’s boldness in physical, cultural, spiritual, and moral terms. I find it very bold. We dare to speak out, we dare to throw ourselves onto the stage, and we dare to proclaim certain values. And I think that’s truly magnificent.”It also expresses a spiritual and moral dimension inspired by ancient Chinese values, combining technical excellence, cultural heritage, and inner elevation.
“The Christian faith, of course, is reflected in a number of the values that are presented,” notes Bishop Jean-Marie Lovey. “The way it is presented, expressed, and articulated is a little different. But it’s wonderful because I think there is something very profound in the human person that is brought to the surface.”
Shen Yun emphasizes spiritual values derived from traditional Chinese culture, such as compassion, righteousness, and belief in harmony between heaven and humanity, which the company seeks to convey through dance and music.
“This need for salvation is at the heart of Christianity,” said Jean-Marie Lovey. “The fact that it comes to us as a gift, as grace, as an abundant blessing. And it comes to us from elsewhere. All these things are present in the way the show is experienced.”
“All the realities of daily life are magnified by music, dance, colors, and harmony,” concludes the bishop. “And that is magnificent.”
