OTTAWA, Canada—Lawyer Tanya Davies saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time on Saturday night at the National Arts Centre and she was very impressed.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. Gorgeous colours, beautiful music, beautiful voices,” said Ms. Davies, owner and principal lawyer of her own law firm.

Davies Law Firm works on a very broad range of cases from immigration to personal injury and divorce, just to name a few.

Established in 2006, the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has set out to revive the divinely inspired culture of China, much of which has been lost under the decades-long communist rule in the country.

The spirituality particularly stood out for Ms. Davies.

“It really brings you in and calms you down. I would say you feel like you’re meditating,” she said.

Ms. Davies said she felt happy and calm at the same time after watching the opening scene, which depicts heavenly beings coming down to earth to establish Chinese civilization.

The last performance, Buddha’s Compassion Shines Forth, also stood out for her. In the performance, a group of Falun Dafa practitioners is persecuted for their faith in Shanghai. The situation seems hopeless and disaster looms in the background, when the heavens suddenly open and Lord Buddha appears, averting the impending disaster and ushering in a new era.

“Very touching, very moving, it touches your soul,” said Ms. Davis of the scene.

Shen Yun’s performances also inspired her to reflect on the concept of reincarnation, which is fundamental to Chinese spirituality. Her understanding was “that this world is not a one-time thing, there is a higher power, and that we reincarnate into higher beings.”

Classical Chinese dance, one of the main features of Shen Yun, is one of the most important ways in which Chinese culture has been preserved through the ages.

“Beautiful, absolutely beautiful, very skillful,” said Ms. Davies of the dances.

Among its program are a few story-based dances that depict tales from history, mythology, and contemporary society. Ms. Davies felt the dances were very expressive, making it easy to understand the stories even without the aid of the two masters of ceremonies who helped provide context to each dance prior to the performance.

“It’s phenomenal. I was really really impressed.”
