KAWAGUCHI, Japan—Mr. Wen Qiang, a Chinese student, began his study abroad in Japan a mere three months ago. It was fortunate timing, as on Jan. 18, he was able to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Kawaguchi Comprehensive Cultural Center Lilia in Kawaguchi, Japan.

After all, New York-based Shen Yun is a show that cannot be seen in China.

“I was shocked by Shen Yun. I felt the performance was very good,” said Mr. Wen. He was amazed by the beauty of Shen Yun, and said “every scene is like a picture on a postcard. It’s great and I enjoyed it very much.”

Mr. Wen praised the solo vocalists, whose voices resonated with his heart.

“Their voices are very strong, and reached very far. They have excellent voices and I feel I can listen to them continually,” he said. “Especially the soprano, I loved her voice. I felt her voice is very powerful and went straight to my heart.”

Mr. Wen said that there is no performance in China as wonderful as Shen Yun, both artistically and in value.

“In China, songs or shows are all just to entertain the public … Shen Yun is very different. No matter the dances or songs, they all make audiences to be more positive and inspired. My soul was purified, watching Shen Yun. I felt wonderful,” he said.

Mr. Wen said he would like to attend again and again, because he thought “Shen Yun is really worth attending.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. It has a mission to show the beauty and goodness of the 5,000 years of China’s civilization.

Chinese culture was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, virtues like loyalty, propriety, wisdom, justice, and benevolence—values that are universal and shared the world over.

‘I Felt Strong Energy’

Mr. and Mrs. Wang are Chinese architectural designers who immigrated to Japan five years ago.

Mr. Wang said, “I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the whole experience. I love the atmosphere here. I felt very relaxed.”

Mrs. Wang said, “Since I entered the hall, I felt strong energy. Especially during the last program, I loved the feeling of that strong energy.”

For Mr. Wang, it was a profound experience.

“(Shen Yun brought us) a lot of things, you can feel it in your heart, but you can’t describe it by using any words. The live Shen Yun orchestra is very unique. I heard pipa (also called the Chinese lute) and erhu (an ancient two-stringed instrument),” he said. “You know, music is a type of medicine. It has a healing effect on the human spirit.”

Mrs. Wang enjoyed the music as well.

Shen Yun’s music is excellent. The music for male dancers is masculine, and the music for female dancers is graceful. The music quite matches the dances. I am uplifted by Shen Yun’s music,” she said.

The Wangs said that Shen Yun presented the real Chinese culture and traditions, as well as humanity, moral values, and other deep messages, which can’t be found in current communist China.

“Shen Yun did a great job of reviving our culture. It also wakens our Chinese people to a longing for our traditional values,” Mr. Wang said. “I was very moved.”

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

‘Never Seen a Show Like Shen Yun’

Mr. Yang Chunhua moved to Japan from China for his job last October. He was astounded by the dynamic backdrop.

“It’s magical. I saw the dancers arrived on the stage from the sky (backdrop),” he said. “When the scene was changed, everything changed accordingly in a very short time. The interaction between the backdrop and dancers is so natural.”

Mr. Yang said the dancers’ skills were excellent, and the vocal soloists voices were touching.

“This is the first time that I attended a show as wonderful as Shen Yun,” he said. “I feel I want to be a better man now. I hope everybody can attend Shen Yun and be better.”
