MONTPELLIER, France—From April 17 to 21, the Corum in Montpellier welcomed the unique sounds of Shen Yun Performing Arts, with songs and dances telling stories of traditional and contemporary China.

Joël Guichard knows the world of entertainment and music well. The son of the famous French singer Daniel Guichard also works in this field as a production manager. He was at the Corum on April 19 to see Shen Yun.

“Incredible, there’s no word to describe it! I think you have to come and see it to realize the quality of the orchestra and the dancers. Everything is perfect! It’s perfect!” said Mr. Guichard enthusiastically.

“I think they are out of this world! One scene after another is displayed in front of your eyes very quickly ... You don’t see the time go by.”

Mr. Guichard explained that he went “through a lot of emotions,” and believes that Shen Yun can bring “compassion for others, a lot of serenity, calm, sharing. And I think you have to come and see the show to feel the emotion that is conveyed.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has grown since its inception in 2006 to eight equal-sized companies, set to visit almost 200 cities this year.

An Eye-Opener

Charles-Henri Cazac, a sales and marketing director, attended Shen Yun’s second last performance in Montpellier for this season.

“I find it very lively, very colorful, with a bit of a fairy-tale feel, a bit childlike too. It’s nice because parents can come with their children, so it’s original; it’s a change from classical ballets,” said Mr. Cazac at the April 21 matinee. A lover of the ballet and opera, Mr. Cazac had high praise for the production.

Mr. Cazac believes the artistic level is “very, very good”, adding: “We are really in front of professionals. So it’s very nice, really, very, very nice!”

The business manager was able to feel “a lot of goodwill in this show.”

In addition to the mythical and historical characters, Shen Yun revealed a part of contemporary China, which touched Mr. Cazac.

“If I understand correctly, the show is also meant to open people’s eyes to what may be going on in China and that can’t be talked about,” he said.

Indeed, the show addresses the reality of contemporary China through two dance narratives describing the Chinese regime’s persecution of people of faith.

The persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners has been going on since 1999. Falun Dafa, known also as Falun Gong is a meditation discipline based on the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance.

“In the past, China was called the “Land of the Divine,” Shen Yun’s website states. People lived in harmony with the universe and believed in the connection between heaven, earth, and humankind. In traditional Chinese culture, everyone from the humblest peasant to the most majestic emperor lived by this connection to the divine. Shen Yun continues this beautiful heritage by placing spirituality at the heart of its stories.
Mr. Cazac could feel this harmony present in Shen Yun’s performances. “Everything is linked and obviously the Divine from above comes to Earth to help. There is an obvious cohesion between all of this. The digital projections at the back are very well done! The editing is really very well done! I don’t know what else I can tell you, but I am overwhelmed.”

Ludovic Bonnafous attended the very last performance of Shen Yun in Montpellier, on the evening of April 21.

This winegrower was very touched by the magic of the show: “It’s a great show, truly amazing, magical, full of emotions. It’s something to see without hesitation. It’s really exceptional!”

“I can say that I felt something very strongly! I was touched by all this injustice and this way of seeing life. Really, it touched me.”

“I have tears in my eyes, but I’m trying to make the most of the show and enjoy every minute,” he said, adding, “I saw myself through those stories ... and the struggle ... and everything that it represented!”

“I was touched by the body language, the way the stories were told, the song, the music! All of this touches one inside, frankly, it does something to me!”

For Mr. Bonnafous, it is clear that, “at any age, in any country, anywhere ... we have this sensitivity.”

“And I think it’s important to find that. It reminds you of that thing where, when you’re a kid, you see the wonderful things and it feels good!”
