HONOLULU, Hawaii—Described as ‘your entertainment center in paradise’, the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu is situated on the island of Oahu at the base of the ‘Punchbowl’, the site of an extinct volcano known as the Puowaina Crater. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts will arrive in Honolulu from Australia, having just finished the Oceania leg of its 2010 world tour. The New York-based company is sharing its vision of cultural renewal with audiences all around the world with sister tours currently performing in Europe and on the other side of America on the East Coast.
Tonight and this weekend, audiences at the Center’s Concert Hall will be treated to a different taste of paradise in the form of China’s unique 5000-year-old culture explained through the universal language of classical Chinese dance and music. Telling stories of ancient legends through to present day struggles in China, the artists are accompanied for the first time by the Shen Yun New York Company Orchestra, a fascinating blend of Chinese and Western traditions created by professional musicians to render the Chinese artistry more accessible to Western audiences.
Boasting a proscenium stage, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, the Concert Hall is Hawaii’s premier performing arts theatre and often hosts broadway productions as well as other national touring shows. This magnificent venue seats over 2,000 people in splendid comfort, and is also used for plenary sessions, symposiums and other large meetings.
Originally called the Hawaii International Center, the multi-purpose complex was erected by Neal Shaw Blaisdell who served as Mayor of Honolulu from 1954 to 1968, and oversaw one of Honolulu’s largest construction booms. After Mr. Blaisdell’s death, the Center was renamed in his honor by his successor Frank Fasi.
The Blaisdell Center is located in ‘Old Plantation’, the historic site of the former Ward Estate which was acquired by the City and County of Honolulu in 1958. Here the Estate’s numerous artesian springs have been transformed into a winding series of tropical fish ponds amidst sweeping lawns and mature coconut palm groves to complete the lush tropical setting. The Center has been running since 1964, and was remodelled and expanded in 1994 to include further facilities such as additional meeting rooms and administrative offices.
Shen Yun’s first performance in Honolulu at 7:30pm tonight, Friday, June 4, will be followed by three others this weekend with 2pm matinee shows on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as an evening show tomorrow at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 5. The performers look forward to sharing their wonderful culture with locals and visitors to Hawaii who will no doubt be glad to welcome back these wonderfully talented artists who live to bring joy, hope, and illumination to everyone they meet.
