NEW YORK—Experiencing Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Saturday, Serafina Restaurant Group owner Vittorio Assaf saw a China he had never before known about.

“I thought it was very educational,” said Mr. Assaf. “It showed me a China that I had no idea [existed].” New-York based Shen Yun revives a culture lost under Chinese Communist rule. Many of the performers are Western-born Chinese that have learned traditional Chinese dance and a cultural heritage their parents simply did not know growing up.

“I love the costumes, the choreography, the dance,” said Mr. Assaf. He said he loves to watch dance performances and saw something original and essential in the classical Chinese dance of Shen Yun, which will run at the at the Lincoln Center until Jan. 16.

“Again I think it’s a journey though China, a China I didn’t know,” said Mr. Assaf.
