HOUSTON—“The performance was absolutely exhilarating,” said physician Jonas Garcia, praising Shen Yun Performing Arts with his family at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston, Dec. 29.

Mr. Garcia was quite fascinated by the traditional Chinese culture presented by Shen Yun. “It was beautiful, colorful, magnificent,” he said. “I think it transcended me and transported me into the cultures of millenia ago.”

Through breathtaking music and dance, the New York-based Shen Yun takes audiences on a journey through China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, a culture that was nearly lost due to years of Chinese communist rule.

“One of the things we have found on this journey is how important the creator is and the heavens are, as well as earth, and how that transcends all cultures. And we have it in our culture as well,” Mr. Garcia said.

“[The] Chinese Communist Party removes the cultural essence of respect for the divine, thereby extracting the heart and soul of traditional Chinese culture,” reads Shen Yun’s website. “Shen Yun seeks to revive these virtues the world over.”

“I think, certainly, it will avail to the rest of the world the richness of China’s culture, and the tremendous legacy that it has—and that it’s had—for milennia,” Mr. Garcia said.

Shen Yun puts on entirely new performances each year, featuring the world’s elite dancers, a unique orchestra, and stunning animated backdrops. Its extraordinary beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired, and Mr. Garcia was no exception.

“It gave me a newness of life, just renewed me, and made me feel really, really good,” Mr. Garcia said. “I'll look forward to seeing it again, and my friends should as well.”
