KITCHENER-WATERLOO, Ontario—City councilor Ms. Whetham said learning about China past and present was a great aspect of the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) show that played at the Centre in the Square Theatre in Kitchener-Waterloo Wednesday night.

As the curtain fell, the full house that took in the show with her gave the performers a standing ovation.

Ms. Whetham said this is her first time seeing a Chinese cultural show and felt that DPA did a great job in portraying aspects of China unknown to her.

“It gives a new awareness of the history of China. It is very educational.”

The show depicts myths and legends from ancient China, contrasting with stories from modern-day China where spiritual belief is persecuted. One such story shows a father of a young girl being persecuted by the communist party for his belief in the spiritual practice of Falun Dafa.

The fantastic scenes that ultimately unfold in this piece present a message of hope and bespeak of a longstanding Chinese belief that good people are ultimately rewarded, even if not in this lifetime.

“It gives you an idea of what is going on in China. Falun Dafa―I have heard of it but I didn’t know the seriousness of it,” said Ms. Whetham.

Aesthetically, she was impressed with the brilliant costuming and DPA’s unique digital backdrop that provides a living set in which each dance unfolds.

“It’s lovely, the costumes are beautiful—the colours and beautiful materials and the head-dresses of the girls. The background scenery is beautiful, lovely. It’s nice, it’s almost like the people are part of the show and then they disappear up into the scenery.”

And the music, she said “fits in lovely. The soprano [Pi-ju Huang] is beautiful—beautiful voice.”

“I would come again to see it if they come back.”

The show will now move on to Toronto for a six-day run at the John Bassett Theatre from January 8 to 14.
