A bacterium has been identified as the possible cause of itchy skin diseases such as eczema or dermatitis, according to researchers at Harvard Medical School. This insight may be the key to finding effective treatments to help stave off these uncomfortable irritations.

In a study published in the Nov. 22 issue of the journal Cell, researchers reported that exposure to the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) triggered the nervous system in mice to send signals from the skin to the brain. Researchers also conducted the experiment in laboratories using human cells.
