An advisory panel set up by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted against allowing the use of Novo Nordisk’s weekly insulin product among type 1 diabetic patients as the benefits failed to outweigh the risks.

On May 24, the FDA’s Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee met to discuss Novo Nordisk’s “insulin icodec,” a weekly insulin injection. At present, people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have to resort to multiple insulin injections daily to keep their condition under control. Novo Nordisk’s insulin icodec aims to provide an easier alternative by requiring once-a-week injections, thus positioning itself for major gains in the market.
