Public advocacy has led major soda brands to phase out the additive’s use, though it can still be found in over 600 products.

On July 2, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it would ban brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a food additive.

The ban will take effect on Aug. 2.
