LONDON—Mr. and Mrs. Favennec were enthralled by the opening night of Shen Yun, Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour at the New London Theatre on March 3. On a cold winters’ night, audience hearts were warmed by the performances and a standing ovation and two curtain calls ensued.

Mr. Favennec, a financial engineer who helps companies with their financial matters, had never seen classical Chinese dance before, and he was thoroughly delighted. “It was wonderful and different from anything I’ve seen before. It was very lovely. ... It is incredible that you can have so much colour, so much movement, and so much harmony together. So I’m very pleased.”

Mrs. Favennec added, “Yes it’s very graceful and beautiful.”

Mr. Favennec continued, “It’s the movement and colours that is most impressive. That these, like flowers—one time where you had the women dancing, they were exactly like flowers opening, which was lovely.”

“Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed that particularly and the last one with the Tibetan dances [Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountain]. Yes, it was really lovely. It’s well worth seeing,” Mrs. Favennec added.

In the Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountain
undaunted by snow and the elements, the dancers of this program vigorously celebrate the joys of the Tibetan steppes as they spin, stomp, and step in an extravagant gesture of welcoming. Long sleeves, sturdy boots, and colorful prayer beads capture the energy and character of these vibrant people.

Mr. Favennec also loved the music, saying: “It’s very unusual, although they are classical instruments, it sounds very Chinese. It is the most surprising thing. … [Yes, I enjoyed it] very much, it’s very well done together. Very well orchestrated and well organised.”

This was the first of seven Shen Yun, DPA performances in London as part of the 2009 World Tour. Shen Yun, DPA is performing at the New London Theatre from March 3–7 before travelling to Denmark on the next leg of the tour.
