HOUSTON—China had a brilliant history of 5,000 years before communism took control. Bob and Sherry Lindley, who came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts to celebrate their 29th anniversary, expressed their appreciation for Shen Yun’s reviving of traditional Chinese culture.

“I didn’t realize that China at one time was a free country before communism. I just assumed it was always communism, so it’s really enlightening to see how a lot of people are trying to change it back to the way it used to be,” said Mr. Lindley, an operations manager.

After the communists took control of China in 1949,  they began a systematic attack on traditional Chinese culture. New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006, and since then, artists from around the world have joined hands in reviving Chinese culture and letting the world understand China before communism.

Mr. Lindley expressed his understanding that “people want freedom again.” He added, “I’m glad to see that a lot of the Chinese people are trying to push it back to the way it used to be.”

Ms. Lindley, a paralegal, conveyed an appreciation for the revival of tradition, as seen in Shen Yun.  “I like keeping hold of traditions, not losing the old ways or the old traditions. I really appreciate that,” she said.

This being their first time seeing Shen Yun, the couple was amazed to see the artistry and beauty on stage. “This is our first time. It’s been great—it’s wonderful. Thank y’all for doing this. [I’m] glad they’re here,” said Ms. Lindley.

“It’s very enlightening to hear the story and to see the dance and to learn more about the classical dances and customs and beliefs,” she added.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, and according to the Shen Yun website, it is an art form that evolved through China’s different dynasties.

Mr. and Ms. Lindley complimented the artists.

“The artists are just great, really great. I commend them on all their hard work and talent. That’s got to be a lot of work for them to do this. And that orchestra is great too,” Ms. Lindley said.

Born in the USSR

Irina Lingard is an art gallery manager who was born in the former Soviet Union. She expressed that she could relate to what was being portrayed in Shen Yun.

“I can relate because I was born in the Soviet Union, so I know everything about the communist regime. It really clicks inside of me. I know exactly what they’re talking about and how [the] communist regime was trying to eliminate religion, and [that] the government would be your religion,” she said.

Shen Yun also features dances from many of China’s ethnic minorities, such as the Mongolians and the Yi. Audience members often say that they leave the theater knowing more about China.

“It opens up the world in front of you, and lots of people learned a lot today. At least for me, it was quite educational,” said Ms. Lingard.

“I also very enjoyed that every dance tells you a story, it has a narrative, it’s not just a bunch of elements together. It’s entertaining and educational at the same time,” she added.
