Merle Steiner served as the chief of staff at the Montgomery County Legislature for 24 years before retiring in 2008. She is married to Steven Steiner, a senior advisor at the State Department. In her position at the Montgomery County Legislature Mrs. Steiner worked on a range of projects from restoring the Great Falls bridges, to helping Montgomery County residents facing eviction.

About Shen Yun’s Performance at the Kennedy Center on Friday, Jan. 22, Mr. Steiner said, “I thought it was wonderful.“ She responded strongly to ”the woman who played the Erhu. She was wonderful.”

Mrs. Steiner said that she was introduced to the ancient classical musical instrument, the erhu, through the piece performed by Xiaochun Qi.

“It was an instrument that I am not familiar with. She pulled such exquisite tone from the instrument,” said Mrs. Steiner.

As for the dancing, “I love the handkerchief dance, one of my favorite dances, the program was creative, and beautiful, visually it was just exquisite. The performers were exact, just perfect” she said.

Mrs. Steiner said she thought the people in the audience liked the message of the evening’s performances.

She alluded to a dance depicting the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, “Nothing Can Block the Divine Path.”

“We come from a country that tries to support freedom of beliefs and it should be the same everywhere.”

“The unhappiness that Falun Gong has, the people who are following that had to suffer in China, and that’s very unfortunate,” she said.

“But it was an interesting and a visually beautiful show and I was glad to be able to see it,” she added.
