It may sound counter to what most people normally do, but if you can save your vacation time until October and take a trip with your spouse and your family if you have one, you will not only save a lot of money, you will also enjoy one of the quietest times possible in many tourist locations.

Of course the first question that normally leaps to mind for travelers concerns finding a vacation spot that still has Summer weather. Fortunately, there are a lot of areas in the Southern United States that are still quite warm.

Here Are Some of the Top Destinations for Vacations in October:

San Diego: Although San Diego is busy most of the year with tourists, it actually grows quiet in late September and the locals use that time to enjoy the relatively empty beaches. Rates go down and availability goes up, as you will be able to see if you use one of the most detailed travel guides online: Hipmunk’s guide to staying in San Diego. From Seaworld to the World Famous San Diego Zoo and on to one of the top ten beaches in America on Coronado Island, San Diego is one city that can be visited year round.

Los Angeles: Los Angeles is further North than San Diego, but due to the coastal climate, it is actually warmer year round. You can therefore enjoy a variety of pursuits, including visiting Disneyland in nearby Anaheim, Magic Mountain in Valencia, or the movie studios in Hollywood. And after your day winds down and you find yourself in Newport or Manhattan Beach, you'll still be able to enjoy watching the sun go down without shivering.

Arizona: Arizona is one of the most underrated October vacation spots. To begin with, the state normally sees fewer tourists than its neighbor so the infrastructure is rarely overtaxed. Another bonus regarding Arizona travel is that it isn’t going to be a problem for visitors to enjoy the weather. If anything, it is the fall season when Arizonans can come out of their homes during the day for the first time because the weather has started to cool down. Both Phoenix and Tucson are popular destination areas with Tucson being a little bit cooler because it is at a higher elevation. Texas: Texas has a variety of micro-climates, but it remains warm all over Texas in October. Austin is a great getaway for its nightlife and its Riverwalk. Houston, although normally humid, has a lot more fun downtown than most people realize. It also has a big entertainment infrastructure that can keep visitors occupied for days. Don’t forget to try the chili while in Texas, as it is the state dish and can be found in restaurants throughout the state. Dallas is a sophisticated city that has a large number of art galleries and museums that can augment your time enjoying the urban outdoors. And if you are craving a beach vacation, check out South Padre Island, one of the longest available beaches in the region.

Traveling in October makes a lot of sense for both families and couples. Plane fares are lower and if you look at expert travel guides like Hipmunk, you will notice that the overall cost of hotels and attractions also drops.
