Grieg is best known for his Piano Concerto but he composed many other fine works including 10 volumes of Lyric Pieces over 37 years from which Hough selected 27 pieces for this recording. These are superb, lyrical miniatures reflecting his emotional response to Norwegian life, landscape, culture, and folklore. His readings are immaculate and sensitive allowing the music to speak for itself. To sample try ‘To Spring’, ‘March of the Trolls’, and ‘Remembrance’. The recording is also technically fine. Listen to a few tracks at a time to appreciate fully his interpretations of these brief but wide-ranging masterpieces.
