One poor little dog found himself abandoned through no fault of his own after living with his human family for 16 years. One day, they simply deemed him “too old” and left him at a vet’s office. Who knows how this poor pooch would have ended up had a local animal rescuer not picked him up.

Chicago the dog’s family took him to a veterinarian’s office in Las Vegas one day in the summer of 2019 and asked for him to be put down. Their reason for such a drastic decision: he was “too old,” KSNV reported.

Despite his advanced age, one “nice lady” from the vet contacted Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue (CMDR), an organization specialized in rehoming older pets. Lucky for Chicago, the volunteers from the center took him in, and they posted his heartbreaking story, written from the pup’s perspective, on a Facebook post.

And it has since gone viral. The post—put together by Angela Campagna, a volunteer with the rescue—explained that the pooch was looking for “a better human that would love me,” and described his previous owners’ actions as “disgusting.”

While searching for a new forever home, CMDR placed Chicago in a loving foster home with Anastasia Alworth. The woman spoke to KSNV and applauded the pup’s friendly character. “Oh, my goodness. What a sweet old man he is,” she said. “Makes me cry. He deserves better. He’s very mellow. He really just wants to sleep a lot.”

According to Campagna, the disposal of older pets is an all-too-common practice. Many owners abandon their dogs after they’ve reached a certain age; how cruel! The woman advised anyone who can no longer look after their pet to “reach out to a rescue.”

When the story of little Chicago went viral, hundreds of people reached out to CMDR offering to provide him a loving home for his twilight years. “We started getting emails and private messages from all over the country,” Campagna added, per KSNV.

In February 2020, The Epoch Times spoke to Linda Gilliam, the founder of CMDR, who provided a small update on the pup’s situation. “Chicago is adopted and doing very well,” she said.

At the time this story was written, the original Facebook post had been shared 603 times with 1,300 “reactions.” Hundreds of people took to the comment section to express their desire to adopt Chicago and their sadness at his situation.

“How can you have a dog for 16 years and not love it and take care of it?” one comment read.

Another person remarked, “I will never understand people, I’m so attached to my animals I could never give them up but especially when they are older. Terrible. Hugs to you Chicago. You’re safe now.”

And one particular poignant comment said:
Chicago- you deserve SO much more. Someone to love you until your last breath. Someone to hold you when you are scared. Someone who would never give up on you. I know you'll find an amazing home where you can live the rest of your life! I’m sorry they did this to you but don’t worry, an amazing person will bring you into their heart before you know it!
