TAINAN, Taiwan—Divine Performing Arts (DPA) International Company’s first show in Taiwan was staged in the ‘cultural capital,’ Tainan. On February 20, thousands of audience members were enthralled by the new programs of the New York-based company.

“Next time if I get a chance, I will come again for sure,” said Hong Guochan, an owner of a garment embroidery business, upon watching the show.

“Aside from the astounding music, DPA’s costumes are unprecedented in my career of fashion design research. I can feel that the process of the making of the costumes is not ordinary. The deluxe embroidery and the overall visual effect just make them so astonishing. It’s a much stronger feeling than I got after watching a show in Disneyland in Japan.”

Praising the “music, costumes, and the dances”, Mr. Hong continued, “[The show] makes me want to explore. How was it transformed? Why was there such a dramatic scene? What meaning did it embed? It gives me motivation to find out.”

Mr. Hong was impressed by the strength displayed by the dancers.

“’Mulan Joins the Battle’ and ‘Mongolian Chopsticks’ genuinely show a lot of strength. The male dancers also manifest a very bright and powerful spirit. The Tibetan dance [‘Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountain’] is pretty unique. It’s rare to see that kind of dance from male dancers. The female dancers’ ethnic dance [‘Dance of the Yi’] also had a distinctive way of displaying.”

Mrs. Hong, who accompanied her husband to the show, shared almost the same feeling.

“I feel that overall it is very different from ordinary dance companies. It is quite overwhelming. It reaches a superb standard.”
