TAINAN, Taiwan—New York’s Divine Performing Arts (DPA) International Company concluded its second show in Tainan on the afternoon of February 21 with a standing ovation. The show has set a record in box office sales in the city, known for its preservation of culture.

“This really marks the history for the Cultural Center. I think probably only DPA can achieve this. DPA is welcomed by everyone here and its ticket sales have exceeded all other shows on record,” said Chen Sioucheng, director of Tainan Municipal Cultural Center.

Among the audience was Chen Baoyu, a dance school administrator and a dance instructor for more than a decade.

“Divine Performing Arts is a must-see show, because it can deliver you visual beauty, including lighting, costumes, stage, music, piano, and vocal. It is a multi-combined show. The entire show together forms a beautiful feast. I cannot not praise it. It is too good!”

Ms. Chen started to learn ballet since she was small. She received a major in ballet in the United States when she was young.

Upon watching DPA, she said she was able to further distinguish between Chinese classical dance and Chinese folk dance.

“Chinese classical dance has its beginning. Classical dance has deep meaning; that kind of content and confined beauty, it’s not achievable by folk dance.”

The two programs that left her the deepest impression were the opening piece The Five Millennia Begin and its drumming, as well as The Poet’s Vision. She said that The Poet’s Vision is very artistic as the male lead dancer’s form, steps and bearing—some principles of Chinese classical dance—are all very good. Since poet Li Bai desires to drink and wants to move nimbly; the dancers who portrayed Li Bai must have a solid foundation to do this.

Ms. Chen was in awe of the emergence of Buddhas in the 3D backdrops.

“Through arts we could feel that Gods and Buddhas exist everywhere and will look after every one of us. We are all very fortunate people to sit here and have the opportunity to watch Buddhas and Gods dancing. I hope we can all treasure this luck.

“I will bring my students to come and watch this show. It is so rare to see a performance so pure and embeds truthfulness, compassion and forbearance. Today’s DPA, no wonder there are more than 300 shows worldwide, because it is so good and it comes every year.”
