WOKING, U.K.—Whether it’s classical Chinese dance, ballet, or any other dance form, countless rehearsals are necessary for the dancers to achieve absolute unity and togetherness.

Patrina and Paul Johnson were very impressed with the dancers of Shen Yun Performing Arts after they displayed immaculate formations and unity.

“You could line them up with a laser and one wouldn’t be anywhere out of line. Perfect,” said Mrs. Johnson.

Timing is important on stage but timing is equally important off the stage. Every costume change and prop must be taken at a quick tempo as well.

“The speed with which they can change costumes and the precision ... were amazing,” remarked Mrs. Johnson.

Shen Yun is based in New York and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“It’s a different culture to which I’ve not been exposed before and I’m learning something new,” said Mr. Johnson, a retired company owner.

After seeing Shen Yun, the couple learned that Chinese culture is very close to the divine.

Mrs. Johnson was struck by how elegant and humble Chinese culture is.

“Humble. Yes,” Mr. Johnson agreed. “Because it’s like the worship to the divine.”

Shen Yun’s website tells us that China was once known as the land of the divine. Present-day communist China doesn’t allow its people to believe that there is heaven, but Shen Yun strives to showcase China before communism to audiences.

“Well, they obviously believe there is a heaven, which is interesting. I haven’t really thought about Chinese people feeling that way,” said Mrs. Johnson.

Something else that struck Mr. Johnson was that “the regions of China having different dances.”

Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, which requires excellent strength and flexibility from its dancers.
“I think they’re very athletic and very precise. And the costumes are beautiful,” said Mrs. Johnson.
