METAIRIE, La.—Ashley Landry, Jeanette Stout, and her son Mark Stout saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 13 at Jefferson Performing Arts Center.

“I just love the colorful outfits. I love the culture. I’ve wanted to see it for years,” Ms. Stout said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I thought it was a wonderful telling of culture. I love seeing the ballet. I liked the explanation of what Shen Yun means. It wasn’t just a performance—it was also an education. So, I enjoyed that,” said Mr. Stout, a first officer.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I think it’s important. I prefer for art to be used for a deeper philosophical meaning or spiritual meaning, so I do appreciate that it was used in that way,” said Ms. Landry, who owns a wedding business.

Shen Yun’s dance stories also portray the modern true story of Falun Dafa practitioners being persecuted for their faith in China. Falun Dafa is a peaceful practice that teaches the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.

“It was beautiful. It’s sad to me that they can’t worship the way they want to in China. So I know that besides it being beautiful, it’s got a very deep meaning for the people that are performing it. I’m glad they’re in America, and they’re able to do that,” Ms. Landry said.

The costumes in Shen Yun were designed by Shen Yun’s artistic director, D.F. The costumes are all designed to match the fashion worn throughout the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“The colors I found were pastel, but bright. It’s a different combination. I don’t find that we do a lot of bright pastels. Our pastels are way more subdued, but I really loved how bright the pastels were. I am actually thinking of different things that I can put together in my own wardrobe after seeing the colors that they were putting together,” Ms. Landry shared.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“I’ve never seen anything like that where they’re jumping into the screen. So I like how they did that,” Ms. Landry said.
