SAVANNAH, Ga.—Beautiful music moves the soul, and that is exactly what Stephen and Katrina Patrick experienced when they saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Johnny Mercer Theatre at Savannah Civic Center on Dec. 30, 2025.

“We actually both cried when the baritone started singing,” shared Ms. Patrick, who works in sales.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in the bel canto technique, and Shen Yun’s digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese lyrics being sung.

“The song that he chose; the words were very meaningful to us because we believe that,” Ms. Patrick said.

The lyrics that struck Ms. Patrick spoke of finding your true purpose on earth.

“It was all about goodness. … And we love that. I think in the world today, we need that,” she said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I think my biggest takeaway, too, is there’s so many outside influences now, not like the old ways, and that’s what’s killing our society … If we could stay with the traditional ways, I think we would be fine,” said Mr. Patrick, who also works in sales.

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“The orchestra was wonderful. … The bass player was awesome. They were great,” Mr. Patrick said.

One instrument that shone under the spotlight was the two-stringed erhu.

That was unbelievable. I would love to see even more of that. I thought that was gorgeous,” Ms. Patrick said.

With 5,000 years of history and literature to draw from, Shen Yun is able to put on an all-new production every year.

“I’m sad now because I wish I could have seen them. They said they change the show every year. I wish I could see all the shows now,” Mr. Patrick said.

Mr. Patrick also encouraged Shen Yun to continue on its mission. “It makes everybody feel so good. It’s such a great message.”

His wife shared similar sentiments. “Absolutely. Keep bringing the music and the tradition of dance.”
