NEWARK, N.J.—Shen Yun Performing Arts dazzled theatergoers at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on May 3, transporting the audience on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Maria Gilliam, a pharmaceutical director, said, “The dancing is fabulous. And the backdrop, all of the special effects, are amazing. The timing is just perfect on all of the special effects.”

“I was really impressed with the music and the way the music tied in. And the music was just hard to believe it’s from an orchestra, it’s beautiful,” Patrick Goonan, a property manager, said.

Teagle Walker, a theater artist, said, “The emotion they’re able to convey through the dance is really empowering, especially that piece with the mother and the son, how much they were able to portray through these incredible acrobatic feats, is really interesting.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism,” through classical Chinese dance and music.

Eden Walker, a director and playwright, said, “Incredible storytelling. Again, that piece with the mother and the son, really, really emotionally impactful, especially since this is my son. It really was moving and just made me think about the amount of religious freedom that we have in our country comparatively.”

Ruben Bello, a business owner, said, “I think it’s amazing. Any culture that brings back its history, its stance, its traditions, it’s amazing.”

Mr. Bello added, “It’s very divine, very heavenly, if you will. So it touches more than just the ethnic and the culture.”

Mr. Goonan said, “It’s nothing like anything you’ve seen before. It’s totally different from any kind of Broadway show.”

Ms. Gilliam said, “Please continue to share your experiences with us. I think it’s a good opportunity for us to learn how China was in the past and some of the struggles that people in China are going through.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Stamford, Connecticut, from May 7—10.
