SAN ANTONIO—Christina Keenan, a computer science instructor at a university, came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 11, with her mother, at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
Ms. Keenan said that she could see “the pushback against everything that took the traditional values away.”
After various political campaigns by the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese culture was systematically distorted and almost destroyed.
“With communism, the push to try to make everybody only believe in what the government is doing and not being able to think and remember all this that happened before and trying to push away all your culture—it’s horrible,” she said.
For Shen Yun to revive traditional Chinese culture and values is inspirational for everyone else who has experienced the destruction of their culture, she said.
“They’re so good. There’s the work they put into it. It’s more than just the dance; there’s the whole idea behind it as well. Trying to influence change through art. It’s graceful and beautiful,” she said.
She added that the colors in the water sleeves dance reminded her of “a sunset on the water.”
“It was so awesome. I just had goosebumps,” she said.
Ms. Keenan said that seeing Shen Yun is something her students should do “if they want to see something that will make them think and still be inspired by beauty.”
