SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Alejandra came from Mexico City, and her son-in-law, from the UK, gifted her a ticket to see Shen Yun Performing Arts for Mother’s Day. She was happy to share that the performance touched her heart.

“I’m very appreciative and very happy. And I feel very blessed that I came in,” said Alejandra, a retired secretary. She shared that Shen Yun has been on her bucket list for some time, and now she knows the meaning of “Shen Yun.”
Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“I thought it was amazing history, amazing art. I really loved the history and the art together. The music and the orchestra were very strong because they were live. So I loved that, the combination. The dancers, of course, were very good,” said Claudia Nodal, a court interpreter.

Shen Yun’s uses dance and music to present what China was like before communism.

“China before communism, which is where it was. I think China is one of the most millennium cultures in the world and the oldest culture in the world. And it gave so much to the world, and this shows some of that very strongly. It shows what it gave to the world. I love it. I was amazed,” Ms. Nodal said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“I never thought a ballet could get into your heart, into your soul. I was very impressed by the dancers, the colors—the whole show. And now I’m so impressed to know that they have a different show every year. That’s amazing,” Alejandra said.

While classical Chinese dance and ballet have similarities, there are key differences that set the two systems apart, including the footwork and the spins.

“It is one of the best things I’ve seen in ballet. And I like ballet in general, but this is different,” Ms. Nodal said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“The artistic level is high, the colors, the creation, the backgrounds. And it is, of course, the background of a Chinese true culture, true territory. But it’s beautiful. I mean the outfits, the coloring, the movement. I thought it was very high, the artistic design,” Ms. Nodal said.

Shen Yun spends months on the road sharing the beauty of Chinese culture with the world. For the other months, Shen Yun is perfecting its new production.

“The colors are perfect, the choreography, everything was very well put together. It was a very well-executed show. It was kind of funny in parts and uplifting and inspirational. It was very impressive,” said Simon Campbell, Alejanda’s son-in-law.
