BOSTON—Rosa Gonzalez, a research director with a trading brokerage, loved Shen Yun Performing Arts’ rich storytelling.

She attended the first of four weekend performances Feb. 28, at Citi Wang Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts.

“Really, amazing,” she said.

The New York-based Shen Yun has the mission of reviving China’s 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through the performance of music and classical Chinese dance.

Ms. Gonzalez said she loved the imagery of the choreography displayed in the dances. She also saw from some of the dance pieces a commonality across cultures of “finding hope,” and a transcendence of daily life.

She found Shen Yun inspiring. “It really was inspiring to see all the dances, and the kind of themes they were trying to work with,” she said.

According to the Shen Yun website, themes include: “Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution.”

These principles, it continues, originate from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism traditions, and “are the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”

Ms. Gonzalez commented on the “impressive ... variety of things represented in one rich show.”

A Shen Yun performance contains dance, soloists, colorful costumes, a state-of-the-art animated backdrop, and a unique East-West orchestra.

Shen Yun has been enjoyed by millions across the globe since its founding in 2006.
