SAN JUAN, P.R.—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts dazzled audiences in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 1. Theatergoers shared their appreciation for the beauty and message of the show.

“The show is beautiful. I loved the professionalism of the dancers, the costumes, the set design,” freelance journalist Eira Canales said, adding, “The message they convey is very positive, very beautiful, and much needed these days.”

Marcos del Valle, journalist and president of the online newspaper El Adoquín Times, attended Shen Yun for the third time. “It’s the third time I have attended the show in the three years that Shen Yun has visited Puerto Rico,” he said, noting that each year, the show has been an all-new production. “I’m taking away a lot of joy and a lot of spirituality and peace.”

“It was a very beautiful experience,” María de Lourdes Guzmán, an attorney and political analyst, said. “I believe they are very, very talented artists.”

Nairda Hernández, an entrepreneur and educator, said, “Everything is beautiful: the costumes, the precision of the movements, and, of course, the spectacular message.”

Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance, a live orchestra, dazzling stagecraft, and expressive storytelling.

Audiences were delighted by various elements of the performance.

“The stage, the artists, the orchestra: it’s a combination that transports you from daily life to this fantasy that tells of the historical ancient story that leads to China,” Mr. Del Valle said.

“I was really struck by the comedy,” Ms. Hernández said. “I mean, that has been quite impressive for me, the sense of humor it has, because you expect something more serious and, really, the element of surprise and the coordination of its movements, the costumes ... impressive. It’s something incredibly fun that everyone should see—spectacular.”

Ms. Guzmán was impressed by the sound of the erhu, a two-stringed instrument with thousands of years of history. “Seeing how such a beautiful sound is drawn from a two-stringed instrument, along with the skill and talent of the musician who played it, is truly surprising. It is very lovely.”

Each Shen Yun performance highlights themes of spirituality and morality, qualities that resonated with many theatergoers.

“Something I would take away is that we can send a very positive message through art and also encourage their culture to continue through art,” Ms. Canales said.

Ms. Hernández felt “a lot of faith” in the performance. “There is hope for a new society, to be very positive about how art can also impact, through dance, and music, the sense of unity and a better future for the world,” she said.

Ms. Guzman said, “I think this type of show is wonderful in helping us look for what’s important to improve as individuals and human beings.”

“You can see the training involved in this ballet and this production,” Mr. Del Valle said. “I congratulate them for the discipline and the creativity involved in bringing this show to Puerto Rico.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 10–11.
