AMNÉVILLE, France—Company director Simon Depret and his wife, Aurélie, a managing director, had hoped to see Shen Yun Performing Arts ever since they first saw its advertisements on TV and social media. On Dec. 20, the couple finally got their chance and attended the company’s evening performance at Galaxie Amnéville.

“It was very beautiful. The dances, the scenes, the colors—everything was beautiful,” Mr. Depret said.

The couple noted happily that Shen Yun exceeded their expectations. “We’re not necessarily used to seeing dance performances with such a strong impact, so I really wanted to see what it was like in real life, not just on television,” Mrs. Depret explained.

“Honestly, I was delighted to experience it live, to see all the messages that were conveyed and the representative scenes showing China, from the past to the present. It’s a show we would recommend to anyone who wants something different from traditional music concerts.”

Founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who fled persecution, the New York-based Shen Yun is dedicated to reviving the beauty and virtues of pre-communist China. Over the years, the company has grown from one to eight equally-sized groups that tour the world simultaneously.

Mrs. Depret resonated deeply with the artists’ mission and was very excited to have the opportunity to learn about traditional Chinese culture “in a tangible way through dance and storytelling.”

“It’s good to be able to understand more,” she said. “What is happening in [the performers’] country are things we don’t see at home.”

Through classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as live music, the performance guides audiences through China’s dynasties and legends while also raising awareness of ongoing human rights challenges in present-day China.

For Mr. Depret, the central message he will be taking home from the performance is one of “kindness and sharing.”

“We live in a world where everyone is focused on wars and looking for conflict,” Mrs. Depret chimed in. “If we could all move forward simply by talking, sharing, and listening to one another a little more, that would be far better. We could have more kindness and sharing.”

Asked what she would like to say to the Shen Yun artists, she responded: “Bravo to you all. You gave a magnificent performance. Please keep going, it really makes us want to come back and see you again. Hopefully, we’ll see you soon.”
