SAN FRANCISCO—Dance instructor Caitlin Henry said she found the dancing presented in Shen Yun Performing Arts to be “incredible,” especially the challenging moves such as the tumbling performed by the highly trained dancers.

“Their dancing is tremendous,” said Ms. Henry, who saw Shen Yun at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco on Jan. 6. “They’re super impressive.”

Ms. Henry, who has been dancing since an early age, now teaches various styles of dance, including ballet, jazz, modern, and others, at a local academy.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. It was founded in 2006 by leading artists from around the world with a mission to revive authentic Chinese culture and show how China was before the communist regime came to power.
Ms. Henry said she enjoyed learning about China’s rich culture through Shen Yun.
“The whole divine aspect of it, and everything that they’re showing from the past—I’m enjoying learning about it as it goes,” she said.

‘It’s Really Inspiring’

Ariana Gaydosh, a ballet dancer, was also highly impressed by Shen Yun.

“I want to be in Shen Yun or dance at Shen Yun someday,” said the young dancer.

“I like the way they dance, and I want to be as flexible as them.”

Classical Chinese dance, according to the Shen Yun website, has been constantly refined over thousands of years in China.

“Classical Chinese dance is an incredibly demanding, refined, and expressive dance form,” says the website.  “Alongside ballet, it is also one of the most comprehensive dance systems known to humankind.”

Besides the dances, Ms. Gaydosh also praised the costumes used in Shen Yun, as well as the animated backdrops that interact with the dancers on stage.

She added that she would be recommending the performance to her friends so they can experience it for themselves.

“It’s really inspiring,” said Ms. Gaydosh.
