AUSTIN, Texas—Company vice president Dale Walker brought his daughter, Isla, to Shen Yun Performing Arts’ fifth show at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 21.

His hope was that the experience would “give the kids an opportunity to see [Chinese] culture and expand their minds and open their eyes to other people’s art and expression of love and gratitude.”

Mr. Walker was happy to report that Shen Yun turned out to be everything he had hoped for.

“It was a beautiful performance. It was enlightening, and it was thrilling,” he said. The educational value “was wonderful. Very high. It was very well done.”

“I loved it,” Isla chimed in. “It was very fun for all ages, not just adults.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company dedicated to reviving China’s rich culture, nearly lost under decades of communist rule.
The production is comprised of a series of short pieces that takes its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun tells tales from ancient times to the modern day.
Mr. Walker enjoyed every program. “The water sleeves [dance] was wonderful, and we’re a big fan of Monkey King—we love Monkey King. The singing was beautiful, the soprano was very well done. She did amazing,” he shared.

“It’s very spiritual. It was a very wholesome, very loving and [gives a] peaceful, kindness, forbearance feeling. It appealed to the inner self.”

Mr. Walker also appreciates the artists’ mission to bring back traditional values and China’s 5,000 years of divine-inspired culture.

“It gives insights into a culture that we don’t get to get close to,” he said. “When you get to immerse yourself in the culture, you get to you get a feeling for what their values are and what they stand for. [Shen Yun’s] expression of love is really compelling.

“The salvation component, for me, was beautiful. It was graceful. It was about acceptance and that there is hope and that there is something to look forward to. To keep being true to yourself and continue to express love in the world, and that [love] will come back to you.”

Finally, Mr. Walker would like to tell Shen Yun’s performers, “They touched my heart.”

“They touched the eyes of my child, and they did such a beautiful job. I would love to meet all of them. They’re just amazing people, and I look up to them and for their bravery and their skill and their dedication, their emotion,” he said.

“They give their heart up there, you can tell. Their stories are very beautiful and compelling, and I’m grateful that they’ve shared that with us.”
