AUSTIN, Texas—Transformational coach Lars King said Shen Yun Performing Arts is “magical,” after attending the company’s evening show on Jan. 21, with Emily Wiebe, a healing specialist.

“I cried. I laughed. I felt connected with so many different parts of the Chinese story and culture that I didn’t even know about,” he shared in the lobby of The Long Center for the Performing Arts.

“The fact that they added so many things like the baritone, the soprano, the fun stories with the monkey, but also the real persecution— they had everything. I was never bored at all. It was totally worth it on every level.”

Mr. King was very impressed by the harmony of the entire production.

“Seeing everyone moving in this very heartfelt way,” he said, “where everyone was synchronized—it was not coming from their minds, it was coming from their heart intelligence. Everyone could feel that.”

Founded by elite Chinese artists who fled persecution, the New York-based Shen Yun is dedicated to reviving the beauty and virtues of pre-communist China. Its performance takes the audience through China’s dynasties and legends, while also raising awareness for the ongoing human rights challenges in present-day China.

Ms. Wiebe also enjoyed the performance.

“I do not have a lot of knowledge about [traditional Chinese] culture, but I truly am touched in my heart by the passion that I saw,” she stated. “It inspires me to want to learn more and understand what happened, the tradition, [and] how everything came to be—the passion, the heart-driven movements and emotions.”

“It’s not only beautiful to watch, but to know that there’s a purpose along with it, that it’s actually being driven by a genuine belief and feeling—that’s an extra touch, an extra detail. It adds a depth.”

She loved that Shen Yun allowed the audience to “experience with our own eyes, the genuine energy and history of each person participating in it.”

Reflecting on the story-based dance depicting the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of spirituality and the people’s steadfast conviction to uphold their beliefs, Ms. Wiebe said, “It’s beautiful.”

“It’s a very peaceful way, not just necessarily protest, but to express the story of what happened and to bring awareness and unity and also mutual understanding,” she expressed.

“I really believe in love, the way Shen Yun is standing up for themselves without encouraging violence. … There has been so much violence, and [the performance] is such a beautiful yet powerful way to speak truth. It’s almost like a very beautiful example of how you can speak your truth and express it without having to be violent or hurting others.”

This season, the company’s eight touring companies are bringing their stunning performances to over 200 cities worldwide. Presenting a brand-new set of programs each year, Shen Yun has been delighting audiences around the world since 2006.

Mr. King is already planning his return trip. “I want more,” he said. “The fact that they do it totally new every year—it’s amazing. I would totally come another year.”
