DALLAS—Rosa McCorry has wanted to see Shen Yun Performing Arts for a long time. Her husband, Daniel Holmen, granted her wish at Christmas with tickets to see Shen Yun.

“There’s a lot of story lines, it ties all together very well. I definitely enjoyed it. This was my Christmas gift, so I’m definitely enjoying it. I’ve been wanting to see this show for a long time, and he was finally able to bring me to it. I love it,” said Ms. McCorry, assistant city secretary for the city of Gunner.

Shen Yun’s performances in Dallas were postponed due to a storm. Ms. McCorry and her husband were glad that the performances were rescheduled rather than canceled.

“We were on one of the days that it was going to be canceled,” said Mr. Holmen, a patrol officer. “It almost didn’t happen. So it was nice that [Shen Yun] came back.”

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I love the history, being able to learn about the divinities,” Ms. McCorry said.

“It’s really nice to just learn about other cultures. Getting out that perspective is really good, it’s an eye-opening experience,” she added.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
“All the dancers are amazing at their acrobatics and just their style of dance. It’s beautiful,” Ms. McCorry said.
Out of all the dances, the one that left the deepest impression told the true story of Falun Dafa practitioners following the principles Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Despite their goodness, they are being persecuted for their faith in present-day China.

She said, “The story with the mother and the son was very moving.”

She was surprised to learn that this crime continues to happen in the present day.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“The transition from them going onto the screen was really cool,” Ms. McCorry said.

Shen Yun’s two Masters of Ceremony provide brief introductions for each piece so that even those who are unfamiliar with Chinese culture can follow along.

“I just love the translation of the man and the woman—having him speak in English and then have her translate it in Chinese was great. Just listening to it, it’s a beautiful language, it just sounds amazing to me,” she said.
