SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—On the evening of Feb. 26, CEO and attorney Ramon Chavez and his wife, Dr. Alicia Alonso, attended the premiere of Shen Yun North America Company at the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré in Puerto Rico.
Throughout the evening, audience members were captivated by a wide variety of programs—at times joyful, at times contemplative, and at times so moving that some were brought to tears. When the curtain fell, thunderous applause filled the theater. Many rose to their feet in appreciation, their cheers echoing warmly through the hall.
Mr. Chavez, CEO of a real estate management firm and an attorney, said he greatly enjoyed the performance, as did his wife. “The performance is magnificent, extremely well executed,” he said.
Ms. Alonso agreed enthusiastically. “Yes, we loved the colors and the dances in the performance. Everything was absolutely beautiful. The female soprano was excellent as well,” she said.
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. Since its founding in 2006, the company has presented an entirely new program each year, captivating audiences worldwide.
“We have always appreciated culture, especially Asian culture,” Ms. Alonso noted. “What we saw tonight was classical Chinese dance, a form we had never seen before. We truly enjoyed it.”
“These artists are extremely talented—absolutely superb,” she continued.
Mr. Chavez, who emigrated from Cuba, also spoke about the deeper meaning he perceived in the performance. “I came from Cuba, and I have a strong aversion to communism, yet they are preserving tradition, which I deeply admire,” he said.
“The tradition represents everything,” he explained. “It represents life, family, and society. Tradition is what God bestowed upon us as human beings.”
Reflecting on the cultural message presented on stage, he concluded, “What is showcased on stage is the real China—the traditional Chinese culture. No one can take away this culture. This is the life [of the Chinese people.]”
