CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Rick Begovich, who works in commercial real estate banking, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on Feb. 22 at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.

“I think it’s a very interesting perspective into Chinese culture,” he said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“With everything that’s happened in China, it feels like you always wonder how much of the historical ancient culture has been lost with things that have happened over the last 50 or 60 years. Being able to bring back and recognize the history and the tradition that goes back thousands and thousands of years, I think that’s really interesting,” Mr. Begovich said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance—one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. “The athleticism of it reminds me of ballet,” Mr. Begovich said.

He was also very impressed with Shen Yun’s beautiful color combinations.

Shen Yun’s creative use of its digital backdrop to create a patented special effect draws fascination from the audience every time. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“I thought the dance and the interaction with the video was very good,” Mr. Begovich said. “It was very interesting.”

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I definitely enjoyed the music too. The orchestra and everything’s been excellent,” Mr. Begovich said.

Anna Durek and her daughter were also in the audience for this matinee performance.

“We loved it, it was just divine. The ease of movement was so beautiful even though it’s so intense. But it just was effortless and everything was just perfect,” Ms. Durek said.

Working in physical therapy, Ms. Durek is experienced with movement and healing.

“My appreciation for what they had shown in terms of the body’s capabilities, it was so beautiful. And the amount of work the performers can put into bringing this together, it’s just beyond anything,” she said.
With 5,000 years of Chinese history and literature to draw from, Shen Yun puts on an all-new production every year.

“It was just so peaceful. That was our first experience with Shen Yun, and it was just the best thing ever. So we'll definitely come back next year,” Ms. Durek said.
