AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company staged two performances at the St James Theatre, Wellington, and three performances at the Auckland ASB Theatre. Audiences came from far and wide to attend the performances.
Business owners, Delmacine and James Heyder, travelled two hours to watch the performance at the ASB Theatre. Mrs. Heyder was overcome by what she experienced. “It’s just so so special, I cried. It was so beautiful, it touched my soul.”
“If I was to pass away tomorrow, I have seen something so spectacular that has touched my soul that I would be happy to go. That is how special that show was for me,” she said.
Shen Yun’s stories resonated with Mrs. Heyder.
“Traditional value of belief, in a higher power [or] creator, and that good overcomes evil. And, if you practice just gentleness from your soul, from your heart, things will happen, magic will happen,” she said.
Mr. Achmin Klups who travelled for over three hours to watch the performance, was delighted with what he saw, saying, “I really get the goose bumps from it and I just love to see this performance that is such an art, everything [in] the show is really taking me into the culture of China.
“It is really touching my heart. It is the people, the dresses, the music, the performance, the perfection in the performance. It is just overwhelming.”
Fashion Designer, Rossalia Almeida was impressed with the costumes, “I was actually surprised with the colours that were picked for the costumes.
“I thought they were very creative, they used shades I’ve never expect, shades of each colour that I never expect them to use. Light pinks, and light greys, aqua colours, so I was a bit surprised, but I think it was just amazing, it was amazing really.”
Shen Yun is based in New York and according to their website “Every costume in a Shen Yun performance is presented with brilliant colors, displaying a splendid spectacle—from the Tang Dynasty’s “Raiment of Rainbows and Feathers” to imperial dragon robes, phoenix coronets, and cloud capes; from the civil official’s headdress and robes to the warrior’s helmet and armor; and from the traditional rightward cross-collared Han clothing to the ethnic attire of the Manchurian, Tibetan, Dai, Mongol, and Uyghur ethnic groups.”
Janice Jones a folk dancer loved the gracefulness of the dancers, “The arm movements are beautiful! … Absolutely beautiful! I love watching that, the movement is lovely,”
“When the women are moving, they glide across the floor, they’re so smooth,” Ms. Smith said.
“Then the men leap into their dance, and they’re so gym, so athletic, the women too.
“So I love the grace and movement, and everything about it.”
“Chinese dance is at the heart of what Shen Yun does. Known for its incredible flips and spins, and its gentle elegance, it is one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world,” says Shen Yun’s website.
Peter Stewart, felt he was on stage with the performers.
“I wasn’t in my chair, I was on the stage with the performers and the imagery drew me in, and so effective was the communication of the dancers on stage and indeed the imagery on the extraordinary backdrop that’s been developed there, it really took me onto the stage and I was sharing the messages they were trying to give.”
Shen Yun will perform at the Sydney Theatre Company, Sydney, from Tuesday, April14-17, at the Arts Centre Gold Coast from April 24-27 and The Regal Theatre, Perth from May 1-4.
