CHICAGO—Phil Taillon and his wife, Kellie, both company CEOs, thoroughly enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts when they attended its evening show at the Civic Opera House on May 2.

Not quite knowing what to expect, they were pleasantly surprised by the performance’s beauty.

“Excellent. It’s just very uplifting,” Mr. Taillon said. “The dancing isn’t something we normally see. So, it’s just a lot of fun. We’re loving the show.”

As one of the world’s oldest civilizations, China’s 5,000-year history is rich with breathtaking legends and time-honored traditions. Yet within just a few decades of the Chinese communists’ rise to power, much of this magnificent culture was destroyed.

The spread of atheism rapidly undermined belief in the divine, and the cherished virtues drawn from Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism were swept away.

Today, New York–based Shen Yun is working to revive this lost civilization and to bring back, through dance and music, the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. Taillon, who had visited China before, was particularly intrigued by a dance piece that raised awareness of the ongoing human rights issues in the country. He said he had not realized that the persecution of faith continues today.

Mrs. Taillon, too, said that “it’s a sad thing to hear.”

Shen Yun “is amazing,” she added. “It’s different to hear how things like this are still happening in China, and we’re not aware of it. It’s a great show.”

According to the company’s website, the name ‘Shen Yun” translates directly into “the beauty of divine beings dancing.”

The couple felt the name was very fitting. Upon learning that Shen Yun is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, they offered their congratulations and best wishes for the artists’ continued success.

“Happy anniversary, great job,” Mr. Taillon exclaimed. “We’re amazed by how talented they are.”

Mrs. Taillon said she plans to recommend the performance to friends and family.

“It’s amazing, and they’re doing a fabulous job,” she said. “We can’t wait to let other individuals know to come to the show.”
