MONTERREY, Mexico—Shen Yun Performing Arts mesmerized audiences in Monterrey, Mexico, on April 24, taking theatergoers on a journey through ancient China.

Ernesto Meijica, a ballet teacher, said, “Everything was very magical. We are ballet teachers, so seeing those dancers doing those acrobatics, whether they were tumbling or jumps, they were very impressive because in ballet, we practice some steps that are very similar to what they do.”

Oscar Bacca, an orchestra conductor, said Shen Yun was “Quite refreshing. It might seem like something very traditional, but in the world of symphony orchestras, combining Chinese instruments with the traditional symphony orchestra format is actually quite new. It’s very stimulating to have this blend of sounds.”
Maria Trinidad, a ballet teacher, said, “The way they moved, it seemed like their arms were floating so much, all the port de bras they did as well. Also the acrobatics, which I didn’t know were part of what they said was classical Chinese dance, so that surprised me quite a bit too.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism” through classical Chinese dance and music. Audience members resonated with that message and were amazed by the beauty and artistry of the dancers.

“Reviving that cultural aspect here is a very beautiful way to bring back the knowledge of everything that was experienced over thousands of years,” Jorge Alberto de la Fuente Farias, a mechanical engineer, said.

Mr. Bacca said, “The founder is a genius for having the capacity to visualize everything and be able to express it, execute it, and bring it out to the whole world.”

Mr. Meijica said, “The way they interpret and apply their technique is something totally different from what we classical dancers usually do. Similar, but different. I don’t even know what to say because it’s so many things that I don’t have the right words to describe it, but the only thing I can say is that they are exceptional dancers.”

Mr. Bacca said, “As a former violinist myself, I know the instrument very well and it is an extremely complicated instrument—one of the most difficult. It is a bowed string instrument like the violin, viola, cello, or double bass. So being a bowed instrument, it relies on both hands. Seeing this incredible musician on stage having such control of the right hand, which holds the bow, was quite impressive. For me, whenever we have the opportunity to see these types of instruments, they are golden opportunities.”

Mr. Meijica said, “If they come back next year, I wouldn’t think twice about it. I would definitely come again because there are so many details. And since it’s the first time we’ve come to this show, I was so surprised that I didn’t even have time to take everything in because everything was so perfect, everything was so impressive.”

Ms. Trinidad said, “Don’t miss out, come see this magical world and experience it for yourselves. It’s not the same to hear about it as it is to see it, so come and experience it in person.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Mexico City, Mexico, from May 1–3, as well as other cities in the Americas.
