HONOLULU— Wealth coach Desmond Balbin and Eric Filteau, a professional in the fashion industry, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on May 9.

Both former dancers, the two friends were deeply impressed by the artists’ exceptional talent and skill.

“I love the technique and the costumes and how everything is synchronized together. You can tell that it’s very disciplined and artistic at the same time,” Mr. Balbin said.

Based in New York, Shen Yun artists are masters of classical Chinese dance, an ancient and highly expressive art form dating back thousands of years.

Unlike the modern, military-influenced styles often seen in China today, Shen Yun preserves and performs this tradition in its most authentic form, as it was originally passed down through generations.

Dancing “was our passion, and this is why we came here. It’s very technical. It’s a lot of hours. It’s a lot of discipline. I love also everything about the costume,” Mr. Filteau shared. “I really like the technique, the manner—unbelievable.”

He was also mesmerized by the company’s use of a 3D digital backdrop to enhance storytelling.

“What I like is the 3D dimension—it’s very personal. I was never able to do that before. As a perfectionist, it’s unbelievable. It’s like the 3D dimension is alive with the stage of today. It’s like it’s part of the stage. It’s like it’s real. It’s not like fake,” he said.

According to its website, Shen Yun’s patented 3D digital technology works together with the performers to “extend the stage to infinite realms” and brings to its audience “storytelling without limits.”

Reflecting on the performers’ mission to revive the beauty and virtues of pre-communist China, Mr. Balbin said he could relate to Shen Yun’s goal in “trying to show another side [of Chinese culture] that was before [communism] and really show the beauty of it and the deep roots that it actually has.”

“This is why we came today—because we like beauty and heart and dance and everything—fashion too, the costumes were amazing,” Mr. Filteau added.

For its 2025 touring season, Shen Yun’s eight equally sized companies performed in over 200 cities across five continents.

Since its founding in 2006, the company has been met with widespread acclaim and continues to return each year with an entirely new program of choreography and original musical compositions.
