ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Teresa Bernhardt and Faye Sherman saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 27 at California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
“The show tonight was amazing. It gave me goosebumps. I was crying. It was emotional, and it was the most magical show that I have seen in my entire life, and we go to a lot of shows,” said Ms. Bernhardt, a sales consultant.
Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism,” and revive people’s connection with 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“I know it’s a popular show, and to have a show bring out the emotion that this show did—the beautiful scenery and the dancers—what a performance they did. It’s just spectacular,” Ms. Bernhardt said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Ms. Sherman shared that she enjoyed the choreography. “It was just mind-blowing,” she said.

She added that seeing Shen Yun, “just made you feel good.”

As someone who has been all over the world, seeing Shen Yun put Ms. Bernhardt back at some of the destinations she loved.

“I’ve been everywhere, all the seven continents. And for me to see the Japanese blossom and see the Chinese buildings, I get goosebumps. It just makes me alive, and I put myself in that area, and it’s just amazing,” she shared.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“When they jumped behind the scene, it just looked real. It was amazing. I’m so impressed,” Ms. Bernhardt said.

The presence of divinity is prevalent throughout the performance. Ms. Bernhardt felt hope in Shen Yun.

“There’s hope. Knowing what’s going on in the world, the way I feel is kindness. Kindness is like confetti. You want to spread kindness everywhere. It’s free, spread it everywhere. You treat the neighbor the way you want to be treated. I get goosebumps telling you that. It’s true,” she said.
