BOSTON—The three ladies were happy to be sitting front and center at the Citi Wang Theatre for Shen Yun Performing Arts, on March 2.

“We are loving this,” said Eileen Federico, retired medical director for the Boston Globe Medical Center. She explained that she was there with her sister Phyllis Price, and their aunt Lorraine Shuck.

The trio went to Shen Yun to celebrate Ms. Shuck’s 81st birthday.

“I feel so lucky to be with these two girls. A wonderful performance. Wonderful, wonderful,” said Ms. Shuck.

They were sitting so close that they could see the Shen Yun dancers’ facial expressions. “I have nicknames that I have made up for them. Pretty one, little one, classy one,” described Ms. Federico.

Shen Yun is a nonprofit based in New York. With a mission of reviving 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yun has attracted top talent from around the world. Many artists are winners of international dance, choreography, and music competitions, according to the company’s website.

Ms. Shuck said the choreography of the classical Chinese dances was “absolutely beautiful.”

“The detail in the costumes is unbelievable,” said Ms. Price, a Boston-based school nurse. She added that the costumes’ colors are also beautiful.

Every year, Shen Yun travels for about six months, performing in about 20 countries and 100 cities.

The elderly Ms. Shuck commented on Shen Yun’s empathy in allowing people to see and learn about China’s past dynasties—to “just see the beauty.”

A school teacher for decades, Ms. Shuck said Shen Yun teaches its audience to “appreciate the values of each race.”

Ms. Federico said she appreciated Shen Yun’s modesty, and how respectfully the performers are dressed.

“No matter what today says,” Chinese culture never ends, said Ms. Shuck.

“How can [anything else] beat this?” she added, “It is so beautiful.”
