SYDNEY, Australia—Canterbury Bankstown City Councilor Wendy Lindsay had a wonderful time at Shen Yun’s matinee on March 25, at the Sydney Lyric. Captivated by the beauty of the performance, she encourages everyone to “definitely come and see it.”

“It’s amazing. There’s something in it for everyone,” she shared. “The costumes are amazing, and the amount of rehearsal and practice it would take to perform some of those moves is just unbelievable. Really beautiful and perfect.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company.

Its production is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun tells tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Ms. Lindsay loved every element of the performance and said she couldn’t find a single fault.

“I think the whole thing is amazing, really. It’s pure perfection, and they make it look so easy. It’s amazing. Beautiful. Very, very beautiful show,” she exclaimed.

“I used to watch the Monkey [King] when I was a kid, so it’s nice to see that come to life on stage. The whole thing’s amazing. It’s beautiful. Very well put together, and the music as well. The orchestra is lovely.”

She also appreciated that, beyond presenting classical Chinese stories, Shen Yun highlights the importance of faith and traditional values, while shedding light on human rights issues in present-day China.

“The cultural part of [Shen Yun] is certainly of interest, but I think, too, it’s how it transforms into today’s world. It’s just very well put together,” Ms. Lindsay said.

“The stage movement is seamless—you can’t hear the piano coming on and off. And the dancers in the traditional costumes with the wooden shoes—you can’t even hear them when they’re dancing in those shoes.”

“It’s amazing. It’s unbelievable, definitely.”

Although Ms. Lindsay is not familiar with traditional Chinese culture or language, she had no difficulty following the stories conveyed on stage. She enjoys how Shen Yun tells stories through dance and music, without the need for dialogue.

“I think the language isn’t a barrier. You can come and see the show without speaking any form of Chinese or any other dialect,” she said.

“From that perspective, anyone can come and see the show because you can see the story being performed without having any words. … It’s so beautiful. Definitely, come along.”
