NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Bill Greenman, an author and minister, and Meg Greenman, also a minister, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at The Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on May 10. Mr. and Mrs. Greenman had also been circus performers for seventeen years, and thus had plenty of appreciation for the jumping and flipping techniques in classical Chinese dance.

“We love the performance,” Mr. Greenman said.

“Very, very, very professional,” Mrs. Greenman said. “[I] loved it. Very athletic, very incredibly done. ... They make it look so easy and they work so hard to make it look easy. It was just excellent. And the costuming and the lighting [were] very creative, very good.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and show audiences the beauty of “China before communism.”

Mr. Greenman enjoyed the music performed by Shen Yun’s live orchestra that combines traditional Chinese and Western instruments.

“The orchestra was phenomenal,” he said. “It’s so easy to get caught up in just watching the dancers, but there were times when I just had to listen to the music because it was so beautiful. And the speed of some of the stringed instruments—it was just beautiful. The whole production just was amazing.”

Meanwhile, the handmade costumes and vibrant colors were what captured Mrs. Greenman’s attention.

“I think what is amazing is the way they did the costuming and the colors,” she said. “The overall effect of the way the movement and the costumes and the colors—it was just beautiful.”

As ministers, Mr. and Mrs. Greenman appreciated the spiritual elements of traditional Chinese culture that Shen Yun portrayed.

“The creativity of how they expressed their religion or their faith was beautiful,” Mr. Greenman said.

“You'll be hard pressed to find a show where everything flows so beautifully, from the announcers to the orchestra to the singers to the dancers,” Mr. Greenman said. “It was just so wonderfully done. It’s definitely an experience I think anybody should come and see.”
