SAN FRANCISCO—While attending Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at the War Memorial Opera House, Domenico Di Mola, a vice president of Juniper Networks, was pleasantly surprised by the profound depth of traditional Chinese culture.

“It’s amazing and very interesting. The spiritual part of this culture—the connection between the earth, the spiritual, the divine, and the real events was really good. A harmonic combination,” he expressed.

“I was really curious because I heard about [Shen Yun], but I never had the time to come. I think it’s something that deserves to be seen because [the artists] are amazing.”
For thousands of years, Chinese people were very spiritual and believed that their culture was a gift from the heavens. Yet under the communist regime’s violent rule and its spreading of atheism, China’s 5,000 years of traditional culture were forced to the brink of extinction.
Based in New York, Shen Yun is now dedicated to reviving these traditions and showcasing to the world, through dance and music, the beauty of China before communism.

As a devout Christian, Mr. Di Mola said Shen Yun’s take on spirituality was very familiar, and “it’s always nice to see that people are going back to [their] roots.”

His biggest takeaway from Shen Yun is that “being spiritual [means] to connect better with our being and the universe that surrounds us.”

“In our time, everything is in a rush. We don’t pay attention around us, [whether it’s] to nature or others,” he stated.

“[Shen Yun] is a good call back for thinking about our relationship with ourselves—something that’s not material that we can own or buy, but rather, something that we can enjoy, share, and give us a broader purpose for why we are here.”

Also enjoying Shen Yun for the first time were Jody Iorns, the director of a non-profit, and her husband Lowell, a retired judge.

“It was fabulous, absolutely amazing. The timing and the synchronicity were beautiful. The choreography was great,” Mrs. Iorns said.

“I liked the spiritual message. I respect the passion behind it and the folks that want to break away from the communist party to be able to express the freedom that we have here in the United States.”

The couple was especially amazed by Shen Yun’s 3D backdrop.

According to the company’s website, Shen Yun’s innovative digital technology creates seamless interaction between the backdrop projection and the performers on stage. “By extending the stage to infinite realms,” this patented 3D invention brings to the audience “storytelling without limits.”

“We really thought the technology and the use of the screen and stage was pretty fabulous,” Mrs. Iorns stated.

“The interaction between [the dancers and backdrop] was just so much fun, it added a great dimension to the whole evening.”
