SALT LAKE CITY—On March 13, tech entrepreneur Jay McCarthy and his wife, Libby, enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater. Mr. McCarthy was wowed by the beauty of the dancers.

“It’s very beautiful. The performers, they’re very graceful and very strong. We watch ballet a lot, and so it’s really interesting to compare [classical Chinese dance] to ballet,” he commented.

“It seems in [Shen Yun,] the whole group are as talented as the soloists typically are in ballets. They do really beautiful things.”

Mrs. McCarthy was also very impressed.

“They’re extremely graceful,” she said. “I don’t find gymnasts to be as graceful as ballerinas, for example. [Shen Yun dancers] combined the grace of the ballet and also the strength and the athleticism of gymnasts, which I found very impressive.”

“I thought the choreography was very creative and beautiful.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company.

The production comprises a series of short pieces that takes its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the present day.

Mr. McCarthy especially loved the company’s story-based dances that, without any use of dialogue, portrayed tales from Chinese classics such as “Journey to the West.”
“I really enjoy seeing like a—more like a traditional China. You don’t often experience it as an American, you don’t really know much about the traditional Chinese folk tales. I’ve heard of [the Monkey King], and I’ve heard of Mulan, but these other stories are much more unique and interesting,” he shared.

“It’s very cool to see. I like the vignettes that were in the modern time, showing good values. That was really enjoyable.”

“The acting was excellent,” Mrs. McCarthy added. “It’s very clear what the story was, even if you didn’t read about it.”

Upon learning that the name “Shen Yun” translates directly to “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” Mr. McCarthy said this name fully encompassed the essence of the performance.

“The whole theme is that humans are divine beings and that we have this innate divinity in us, and we want to like recognize that in ourselves and in others,” he added. “That can inspire you to do good things and inspire you to see the good in other people.”
