SYDNEY, Australia—Retail manager Patsy Borovilas and Houda Aboushadi, who also works in retail, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ March 25 matinee at the Sydney Lyric. The two friends were deeply inspired by Shen Yun’s rich display of culture and history.

“This whole show, it gave me enlightenment, it gave me hope, and a different vision in life,” Ms. Borovilas, “because it goes to show how history was, and then the modern times. It’s good to actually see that, to bring back those values and the morals.”

The performance showed “the humanity, … that there were also bad people and also good people, and it showed the yin and the yang in life, the dark and the light. When you see the good, your heart opens up.”

New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.

For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.

The artists’ mission is to return to the world’s stage, the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Ms. Borovilas also thought Shen Yun’s music was absolutely beautiful.

Presenting a brand-new set of compositions each year, the live orchestra seamlessly blended a classical Western orchestration with traditional Chinese melodies and instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa, an ancient lute.

“The music was outstanding,” she praised. “The music [and] the colors, the way they danced, the passion of the passion that they put into it, the energy of the people—is outstanding.”

“We always see [Shen Yun] advertised on TV, and it was always [on] my bucket list to come.”

Ms. Aboushadi, too, thoroughly enjoyed the show. She thought Shen Yun was very educational and entertaining.

“I love the colors of the dancers. Very flexible,” she said. “I really enjoy, because you learn about cultures and I love it.”

She loved that Shen Yun depicted not only legends from ancient times, but also raised awareness about human rights issues in present-day China under communist rule.

Shen Yun shared a “big message for [the audience] to understand the real history of China before communism,” Ms. Aboushadi said.

This is “very important for the new generations to understand what’s going on—how [China] was before and now. And all about freedom and the freedom of speech, too. That’s important to the new generations.”

The two friends said they will definitely recommend Shen Yun to their friends and family.

“At least, people need to see it once in their life because it’s something that’s unique,” Ms. Borovilas shared.

“I came in feeling a bit flat, and now I feel like I’m uplifted. Our energy’s coming up now. … Feeling spiritually free and enlightened.”

“I will watch it again with my partner next time,” Ms. Aboushadi added.
