SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—The 2024 season is the first time for Shen Yun Performing Arts to step onto Puerto Rican soil. Shen Yun is scheduled for six performances over four days from January 19–22 at the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A Ferré.

José García owns a transportation business in Puerto Rico and Florida, and after seeing Shen Yun, he expressed his admiration for Chinese culture.

“The show is fantastic. I love everything about Chinese culture. The history portrayed through Shen Yun is excellent and I really enjoyed it,” he said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and it currently has eight companies touring the world simultaneously. Mr. García shared that Shen Yun made him feel “an enormous excitement to see all this dance and this ancient culture that fulfills all my expectations.”
Shen Yun’s dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most athletic and expressive dance forms in the world.

“I feel all the energy from the dancers, and the dance they perform is spectacular,” he said.

Shen Yun uses dance and music to recreate stories from past and present-day China.

However, while China before communism was filled with spirituality and strong moral values, the same cannot be said for present-day China.

“All these stories really touched my heart. I feel very moved, and I experienced a profound sentiment watching the show, especially considering what is happening in China, where you cannot present this show,” said Mr. García.

He also praised Shen Yun’s musicians.

Shen Yun’s orchestra “is the first in the world to permanently combine Western and Eastern instruments,” according to its website, adding that “Shen Yun’s singers are distinguished by the unparalleled ability to sing Chinese text using traditional bel canto technique.”

“The singer was very good, and the pianist is excellent too. The live orchestra they have is also great; I really liked it,” he said.

Shen Yun’s animated backdrop follows the singer to provide a translation of the text so that audiences around the world can understand what is being sung in Chinese.

“I understood the lyrics very well, and it makes a lot of sense. It talks about how the modern world today is immersed in its own affairs and forgets about the values which are important,” said Mr. García.

He elaborated that the text conveyed important values we often forget in the materialistic world.

“I perceived the message emphasizing the importance of values, kindness, helping others, and stepping away from the materialistic world that often makes us forget these things,” he said.

As someone who frequently travels between the United States and Puerto Rico, he shared that he would recommend Shen Yun to everyone.

“I'll recommend it to everyone; it’s excellent. I already have other friends who are coming to the last show on Monday,” he said.
