SACRAMENTO, Calif.—“It’s a rich and historic culture,” said Mr. Robert Kingston, director of season tickets for the Sacramento Kings, seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts’ revival of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization with his father at the Sacramento Community Center Theater, Jan. 14.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Mr. Kingston said. “The artists are obviously very skilled, very talented, and it’s beautiful to watch.”

Mr. Kingston had enjoyed the music and dance of New York-based Shen Yun, which is unique.

The Shen Yun Orchestra blends traditional Chinese instruments like the two-stringed erhu into a full Western symphony, and Shen Yun soloists sing original Chinese compositions in the bel canto style.

The dancers perform classical Chinese dance and ethnic and folk dances using the classical fundamentals, showing many regions and dynasties of China.

Classical Chinese dance is built on the fundamentals of bearing, form, and technical skill, including many difficult aerial techniques, but being richly expressive at the same time.

“It’s beautiful to watch,” Mr. Kingston said of the traditional Chinese dance. “It’s quite beautiful.”
